Restful Sleep Techniques Using Feng Shui

October 25th, 2008 Author: Candace

Occasionally, you’re going to have troubles falling asleep – it happens to the best of us.  But when you’re finding yourself groggy and unable to concentrate because you just can’t seem to calm down at night, you might want to try some Feng Shui cures and adjustments to help you slow down and get some shut eye.

By simply rearranging your bedroom and trying a few energy balancing techniques, you can go to bed and actually sleep soundly, getting the restorative rest that your body needs.

Begin by Changing your Bedroom

No matter what you want to change about your sleeping patterns, you need to begin by looking at the way your bedroom is arranged.  For most people, we place our furniture according to space constraints, not because we are thinking about the energy.

Here are some easy ways to shift your furniture in order to help soothe the energy in the room and make your bed a place where you can always fall asleep quickly.

• Make sure your bed is not beneath a window – When you have your bed beneath a window, you are letting too much energy into your sleeping space.  The window pulls in energy and this will ‘wash’ over you each time you are sleeping, never fully allowing your body to rest.  Try to keep your bed as far away from a window as you can.  If this is simply not possible, make sure to cover the window with a thick drape to help block the additional energy.

• Get rid of any electronics – When you leave things like TVs, computers, and even digital alarm clocks in your bedroom, their EM (electromagnetic) energy fields can build up in your bed.  Think about when you hear one person whisper.  That’s not too distracting.  But when a group of people are talking loudly, that’s distracting.  The same can be said for these EM producers.  It’s best to remove all electronic device from your bedroom to keep this negative every away from your resting place.  At the very least, keep these items far away from your bed and covered with a soft scarf to help block the energy.

• Avoid sleeping with your feet right at the door – Old superstitions in the Chinese culture believe that when you sleep with your feet near the door, your energy will be carried away during the night, much like people used to drag away the dead by their feet.  Try putting your bed in the farthest corner you can away from your door.

• Make sure your bed is equidistant from the walls – Again, this helps with the overall balance of energy, while also helping you create symmetry in your room’s design.  If this is not possible, try to fill up the excess space with something beautiful to help create a balanced look.

• Avoid hanging pictures of water images – This energy will cause you to have troubles not only falling asleep, but also staying asleep. The water energy is just too much for the bedroom.  This also means you want to keep fountains and other such decorative pieces out of your bedroom.

• Get away from the bathroom – Since there is a lot of water energy in the bathroom, try to make sure that your bed and the bathroom do not share a wall.  This can be difficult in smaller spaces and apartments, but at least make the attempt.  You might want to put some sort of barrier between your bed and the wall if that’s your only other option.

Still More Sleep Tips

But if you’re finding that your sleeping arrangements still don’t feel quite right, there are more things you can do.

• Make sure you aren’t facing a mirror – While it might seem seductive, a bedroom that faces your bed might give you a big surprise in the middle of the night.  If you noticed your own reflection, it would startle you, upsetting your sleep. Even if you weren’t awake for the ‘encounter,’ it can disrupt your sleep.  In addition, mirrors can reflect too much energy into the area where you sleep.

• Don’t sleep beneath exposed beams – These beams create sharp points that will point energy toward your bed, which upsets your sleep and can rattle your energy.  If you can’t avoid these beams, try covering them with wall hangings and drapes.

• Open up a window when you’re not at home – If you can, try to get some fresh air in your bedroom as much as you can.  This will help to keep the energy of the room fresh and clean, while also helping you remove any stagnated energy and air.  Even just cracking the window from time to time will help.

• Make sure to keep the closets closed – When you are sleeping, you should not be facing closet doors that are opened.  This will cause excess energy from whatever is in your closet to ‘attack’ you as you are sleeping.  In addition, you will have a first row seat for cluttered energy if your closet is messy or disorganized.

• Remove all the clutter – As best you can, try to keep the clutter in your bedroom to a minimum.  Make sure you are removing anything from your nightstand that doesn’t need to be there, and make sure you are picking dirty clothes up off the floor.  Energy can get stuck here and interrupt your sleep.

• Remove underbed storage – Even if you’re storing positive items beneath your bed, you want to remove anything from beneath your bed that might interrupt with your sleeping.  Energy from clutter under your bed or just from the fact that you are storing unused things there can be problematic for some people.

• Always choose colors that are subtle – While some people believe that adding reds and pinks will spice up their love lives, and this can be true for some, you might want to choose something a little subtler when you’re having troubles sleeping.  Stick with natural colors that aren’t going to add energy and chaos to your room.

Your bedroom should be your sanctuary, a place when you are stop and relax.  By making sure you’re following these Feng Shui rules, you can ensure that you sleep tight tonight.
